Vanilla - Mother Knows Best

Yes she does… my lovely Mum has pointed out a mistake I made in this post
In it I stated that VANILLA ESSENCE was a cheap, synthetic pretender to the real thing. It’s not.
Vanilla essence is a dilute form of vanilla extract. It is still 100% natural vanilla and a quick read of the label will confirm this. [...]

iPrimus: All Is Forgiven…

For now anyway.
The internet is purring away and everyone is happy again
I have to take this opportunity to thank a rep from iPrimus who emailed me after seeing my post - it was a very pleasant surprise and went a long way in restoring my faith in the company.
The power of the blog [...]

I’m going to divorce my ISP…

iPrimus has exactly one more business day to sort out my home internet connection.
We’ve been dropping out since Tuesday and every time we ring tech help we get a different “explanation” along with an empty reassurance it will be good by ____ ( insert your own time frame- they do)
The worst part of it all [...]

Potato & Chickpea Curry # Roti Telur

Roti Teluris a favourite around here and we are always looking for an excuse to have it with a meal I buy the frozen roti prata - I think these ones are made in Singapore, keep them in the freezer and bring them out for making roti telur.

It’s as easy as pie. I cook [...]

Jam First? or Cream First?

That’s the question scone lovers debate.
However you pile it on, there is no doubt that the “cream tea”, or Devonshire tea  has many fans.
It brings to mind bucolic England scenes - potting sheds, village greens, Woman’s Guilds, Enid Blyton books, country lanes and all things nostalgic.
The scones must be freshly baked, and they should be served warm. The cutting or [...]

Broken Rice, Soy Pork, Noodle Egg & Pickle!

Such a long title for a simple home-cooked meal Broken rice is a favourite at our place. The rice is simply Jasmine rice that has been broken during the milling process. It’s kind of like the cous cous of the rice world, it’s nubby grains have a wonderful flavour and aroma, and magically stay separate [...]

Char Kway Teow For Lazy Boys & Girls

Another Malaysian/Singaporean hawker favourite that I have not a hope of duplicating at home, the following recipe is my approximation of this very yummy dish.

Char Kway Teow ( pronounced a bit like - char kortee ow ) is a wok fried meal of flat rice noodle, egg, cockles, beansprouts and Chinese chives, fried in  lard and seasoned [...]

Goodbye To Our Dear, Sweet Poodle Ziggy

Such a sad post to be writing. Our beloved poodle Ziggy passed on today.
He was an old boy, with his share of health problems, but such a sweet, gentle dog. He loved men: the photo below shows him following my Dad around the garden, he loved his ball and he had the softest curls.
We [...]

Boxing Day Dinner

What a perfectly lovely meal we had last night! I have to share, even though I forgot my camera…very stupid mistake, as dinner was at my mother’s and she is a fabulous cook with the most beautiful sense of charm and style you can imagine. Her platters and dinnerware, her table setting: all perfect.
France is [...]

Vanilla Bean Ice-Cream

This is for serving with the Christmas pudding. I will make packet custard too, but will liven it up with a grate of nutmeg and a slurp of brandy. I would like to say I’d be making custard or sweet white sauce from scratch…. my Mum might get the urge after dinner. You never know [...]
